Memorial Day Musings

It's odd...I've been a bit emotional today. Last year for Memorial Day, Kevin was in Iraq and I was praying that he not be added to the number of those noble dead whom we honor on this national holiday. Today he is home, and the day has been a reminder that he will be leaving again, into harm's way to serve God and Country. Next Memorial Day, he will once again be in Iraq, and possibly the Memorial Day after that, too. And every time I look at him today, I am thinking...don't die. Please, God, don't let him die. Put your Everlasting Arms around him and be his rock and shield...or uparmored vehicle, as the case may be.

Take a moment when you read this to say a prayer or send uplifting thoughts the direction of those families who have lost their loved ones in the course of war...this one or any other. These are quiet heroes in our midst, who have made such an immeasurable sacrifice and live day to day without their loved one by their side. May God's comfort and grace be with them in abundance.

Don't Forget to Remember

Memorial Day has become a lot of things...the symbolic first day of summer, a day for family gatherings and picnics, a day to catch up on yard work. But please don't forget what this day is really set aside for. Take some time today to think of those who have given their lives in defense of our country, and honor them. Express your gratitude for our freedom in some way today, large or small. Attend a parade and cheer for the soldiers or vets that pass by; visit a cemetery and place flags or flowers on some vets graves; fly a flag outside your own home; observe a moment of silence and a prayer of thankfulness for these brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and guardsmen that have gone before us and sacrificed their very lives so that we may live free.

As you enjoy your family, or picnic, or even yard work today, don't forget to remember them and be grateful.

Why I Love Teaching PreSchoolers

My friend Kelly Goree posted a cute activity her son did, in which he completed some axioms with his own words. I thought it would be fun to do the same with my Preschool class, and the results were more than entertaining! Here are some of my favorites:

Better to be safe than think.

Better to be safe than a firefighter.

You can't teach an old dog if it's a poodle.

A penny saved is in a piggy bank (...jar, money place, bank etc).

Don't bite the hand that has peanut butter on it.

Don't bite the hand that has the bites.

As you make your bed, so shall you be a big girl.

It's always darkest before Jesus.

Where there's smoke, there's a tractor.

Where there's smoke, there's fire ... and a fire truck!

You can lead a horse to water, but not milk.

You can lead a horse to water, but you get all wet.

You can lead a horse to water, but you have to find water first.

A bird in the hand is worth climbing a tree.

A bird in the hand is worth two dollars.

Actions speak louder than a holler monkey.

Actions speak louder than a microphone.

Two may keep a secret if you go to sleep.

Two may keep a secret if you whisper it in my ear.

The grass is always greener than the ground.

The grass is always greener in the sun.

A watched pot has flowers.

A watched pot is clean.

Children should be seen and not lost.

Children should be seen and not touch snakes.

This activity was just so fun, and provided many giggles for me and my classroom aide. The imagination, innocence and straightforward manner of children this age is so endearing to me, and that's why I just love my little preschool class so much! It's almost sad to see summer arrive ... almost.

My color

Funny thing is, I used to hate the color green but now I love it. This really surprised me, calm and contemplative? Well...sometimes!

You are a very calm and contemplative person. Others are drawn to your peaceful, nurturing nature.
